Bridgwater Town Hall has taken a step toward sustainability with the installation of state-of-the-art photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on its roof. Now fully operational, the panels are actively generating clean electricity, reducing the building’s reliance on non-renewable energy sources.
The new solar panels will play a key role in Bridgwater Town Council’s efforts to enhance sustainability and reduce its environmental footprint. By generating renewable energy, the panels will help to lower energy costs while contributing to a cleaner, healthier environment.
Bridgwater Town Hall, a Grade II listed building (List Entry Number: 1280140), with both historical and contemporary importance is an iconic landmark in the heart of the town. While preserving its rich heritage, the installation of solar panels ensures the building is fit for the future, aligning with modern environmental goals.
Councillor Tim Mander, Chair of the Amenities Committee said,
“The installation of solar panels has helped ensure the decarbonisation of the Town Hall and the Town Council is no longer dependent on an outdated gas-fired heating system.
The Town Council was able to make the use of grant assistance available from Somerset Council which covered 100% of the cost.
The end product is a cleaner more cost effective and efficient heating system which moving forward will benefit not only the environment but also Bridgwater Council taxpayers.”
Councillor Kathy Pearce, added,
“The installation of solar panels on the Town Hall roof is a testament to our commitment to sustainability and environmental responsibility. We are proud to lead by example and hope this project inspires other communities to adopt renewable energy solutions. Bridgwater Town Hall is not just a symbol of our past—it is now a beacon of our sustainable future.”
The council recognises the importance of integrating environmentally friendly practices into its operations. Alongside other initiatives such as supporting community green spaces and sustainable transport options, this project forms part of a broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions and promote environmental responsibility in Bridgwater.
The energy generated by the panels will provide a cost-effective and renewable power source for the Town Hall, ensuring long-term savings on energy costs. The reduction in reliance on traditional energy sources also contributes directly to combating climate change, aligning with local and national environmental targets.
