A programme of free community events will return to Bridgwater’s parks this summer, bringing together music, history and family-friendly entertainment in welcoming outdoor settings. Showcasing everything from brass and silver bands to live performances and immersive historical experiences, the programme offers something for all ages to enjoy.
The season opens in Blake Gardens on Saturday 25 July with Tea & Trumpets, featuring performances from Burtle Silver Band and Burnham & Highbridge Brass Band. This much-loved event sets the tone for a summer of relaxed outdoor entertainment in the heart of Bridgwater.
On Saturday 1 August, Blake Gardens will host the ever-popular Cobblestones Takeover. Growing in scale and popularity each year, the event will transform the Gardens into a lively hub of activity, with live music, street food, market stalls, classic vehicles and a wide range of family-friendly entertainment. Bringing a contemporary energy to the programme, the takeover continues to attract visitors from across the area.
Wednesday 5 August sees the return of Bridgwater Playday, where St Matthew’s Field will host a national celebration of children’s right to play. This free, family-focused event will feature a wide range of activities designed to encourage creativity, physical activity and outdoor fun, making it a perfect day out for younger residents and families.
The programme then takes a step back in time on Saturday 22 August with the return of Living History Day, when Blake Gardens will be brought to life through full combat displays by The Somerset Barons, historical reenactments from the Ermine Street Guard and authentic musket firing demonstrations delivered by History Workshops. Visitors can also explore a living history camp hosted by The Sutton Household, alongside a range of hands-on activities including axe throwing, archery and interactive sword fighting sessions.
As part of the day’s celebrations, Blake Museum will mark its centenary year with costumed storytelling and interactive tours that bring the museum’s rich heritage to life.
The summer programme will conclude with a Big Community Picnic, taking place this year at Mansfield Park, where we can see featuring entertainment from Somerset Youth Theatre. The event will also give residents the opportunity to enjoy the park following its recent refurbishment, with improved facilities enhancing the space for community use.
Councillor Liz Leavy, Chair of the Communities and Cultural Committee said,
“This summer programme is a fantastic opportunity for people to come together and enjoy our parks through a range of free events for all ages. It’s great to see these spaces being used, whether people are discovering local history, spending time with family or enjoying live entertainment outdoors.
“We’re particularly pleased to be celebrating 100 years of Blake Museum as part of the programme, alongside popular events like Living History Day. I’d encourage everyone to come along and make the most of what promises to be a brilliant summer in Bridgwater. We’re also pleased that residents will be able to enjoy the new facilities at Mansfield Park after a number of years in the making.”
All events are free to attend. The Friends of Blake Museum will be selling refreshments at events held in Blake Gardens and visitors are also encouraged to bring their own picnics, chairs or blankets to make the most of the outdoor setting.
This summer’s programme offers something for everyone, from families and history enthusiasts to music lovers, reinforcing Bridgwater’s parks as vibrant spaces for community activity.
