The Mayor of Bridgwater, Cllr leigh Redman joined runners and volunteers at St Matthews Field Parkrun on Saturday 6 June to thank the volunteers who make the weekly event possible, marking the end of Volunteers’ Week.
“I’m incredibly proud of the volunteers at St Matthew’s Field parkrun. Their commitment and enthusiasm demonstrate the strength of community spirit here in Bridgwater. Events like this show the very best of our community, bringing people together, supporting wellbeing and creating a welcoming space for everyone. Parkrun is about far more than running, and I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t yet taken part to come along and experience it for themselves.”
The visit also coincided with the 25th milestone event for the Bridgwater parkrun, a fantastic achievement since it began in November 2025. What started as a new community initiative has quickly grown into a popular Saturday morning fixture, with around 175 people taking part each week and supported by a dedicated team of volunteers.
Parkrun is a global, free event held every Saturday at 9am, encouraging people of all ages and abilities to walk, jog, run and socialise outdoors. The St Matthew’s Field event has become a brilliant example of how community-led activity can bring people together and promote healthier lifestyles.
Saturday’s celebrations highlighted both the success of the parkrun and the vital contribution of volunteers. Without their time, energy and commitment, events like this simply wouldn’t happen.
Everyone is welcome to take part, and organisers are keen to see even more people from across Bridgwater get involved in future weeks.
