This year’s annual Chandos Society Exhibition at Bridgwater Arts Centre featured a special loan of an original painting by renowned artist Jean Rees.
The painting was kindly loaned from the Royal South West Academy, Bristol, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to view the work of an artist who played a significant role in the cultural history of Bridgwater.
Jean Rees was one of the founders of Bridgwater Arts Centre, helping to establish the organisation as a hub for creativity and artistic expression within the local community. Her influence continues to be felt today through the Centre’s ongoing commitment to supporting artists and bringing high-quality exhibitions to the town.
Adding a personal touch to the occasion, Jean Rees’ daughter, Jenny Sharman, attended the opening alongside her husband, Geoff Sharman, where they joined members of the Chandos Society, artists and visitors in celebrating both the exhibition and Jean Rees’ enduring legacy.
The Chandos Society Annual Exhibition showcases work from talented local artists across a range of styles and media, reflecting the vibrant artistic community that continues to thrive in Somerset.
Cllr Irena Hubble, Chair of the Arts Centre and Town Hall Committee at Bridgwater Town Council said,
“We were pleased to display an original work by Jean Rees, one of the founders of the Arts Centre. It was wonderful to welcome Jenny and Geoff Sharman and to celebrate Jean’s contribution to Bridgwater’s cultural life.
“The loan of this painting provided a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Jean’s artistic legacy while showcasing the continuing creativity and talent of our local arts community.”
The exhibition demonstrates the enduring strength of the arts in Bridgwater, bringing together established and emerging artists while recognising those whose vision helped lay the foundations for the town’s thriving cultural scene
