Bridgwater Town Council joined Avon and Somerset Police and other partners on their coordinated day of action in Bridgwater town centre on Wednesday 1 July.
The multi-agency operation brought together representatives from Avon and Somerset Police, Bridgwater Town Council, Somerset Council, addiction support services and agencies working with rough sleepers. Throughout the afternoon, officers and partners engaged directly with shoppers, retailers and visitors to hear first-hand about the issues affecting the town centre and the impact they are having on both businesses and the wider community.
The event was organised following a rise in complaints from residents, businesses and visitors regarding anti-social behaviour, street drinking, shoplifting and suspected drug-related activity. The aim was not only to address immediate concerns but also to better understand the lived experiences of those who use and work in the town centre every day.
As part of the initiative, officers and partner agencies spoke to traders about the challenges they face, gathered intelligence and discussed the support available to individuals experiencing addiction and homelessness.
Councillor Tim Mander, Chair of Bridgwater Town Council’s Police Forum, attended the event and welcomed the collaborative approach. He said,
“As a Town Centre Councillor, I have been aware of the ongoing issue of ASB and the challenges presented by street drinkers, together with reports of shoplifting and drug dealing.
“It was good to engage and speak with shoppers and retailers and really get a feeling for the lived experience which, at times, is very challenging.
“It was also important for the Police to hear first-hand what traders are facing and, as an example, the impact that a group of street drinkers can have on their customer base.
“Working collaboratively with the Police, together with other agencies, really is the best way of achieving results.”
The day of action forms part of ongoing efforts by Avon and Somerset Police and partner organisations to improve safety, tackle anti-social behaviour and support vulnerable individuals within Bridgwater town centre.
By working together and listening directly to residents, businesses and visitors, agencies are committed to developing practical solutions that address community concerns and help create a safer and more welcoming town centre for everyone.
