Residents and visitors are invited to explore the rich history and culture of Bridgwater this September as Heritage Open Days returns with a programme of free events.
Heritage Open Days is England’s largest festival of history and culture, bringing communities together each year through a vibrant celebration of heritage. Founded in 1994, the festival has spent more than 30 years opening up historic sites, uncovering hidden stories and offering unique experiences – all completely free of charge.
Running over 10 days in September, the festival is powered by thousands of volunteers and organisations nationwide, showcasing everything from guided tours and exhibitions to talks, walks and hands-on demonstrations.
This year’s theme, “Everyday Histories,” highlights the stories, places and people that shape our daily lives, past and present.
Bridgwater is set to take part with a diverse and engaging programme of activities, from guided walks through the town with the Bridgwater & District Civic Society to fascinating tours and live demonstrations at the Somerset Brick and Tile Museum.
Visitors can explore local landmarks and hidden spaces through Bridgwater Arts Centre tours, climb St Mary’s Church tower for unique views, and uncover stories of the past on a Wembdon Road Cemetery tour.
History enthusiasts can also enjoy a thought-provoking talk by the Bridgwater & District Civic Society, “Bridgwater 1024 to 1927: Class Conflict in a Somerset Town,” while the Blake Museum will be open to showcase the town’s rich heritage.
Heritage Open Days offers a rare opportunity to step inside historic buildings, explore local traditions and discover the stories that have shaped the community. All events are free, making it easy for people of all ages to take part and enjoy Bridgwater’s heritage.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious to try something new, there is something for everyone.
