Bridgwater Town Council has officially signed the Armed Forces Covenant during this year’s Bridgwater Armed Forces Day, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community.
The signing took place at the town’s annual Armed Forces Day celebrations, attended by residents, veterans, serving personnel and local organisations. The event provided a fitting opportunity to recognise the invaluable contribution of those who serve, or have served, in the Armed Forces.
The Covenant represents a national promise to ensure that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, along with their families, are treated with fairness, respect and recognition.
By signing, the Town Council has pledged to promote understanding of the challenges faced by service personnel, veterans and their loved ones, and to ensure they are not disadvantaged because of their service.
As part of its commitment, the Council will actively promote the Armed Forces, support key events such as Armistice Day and Remembrance Sunday.
Speaking at the signing, Councillor Leigh Redman said,
“It is a great honour to sign the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of Bridgwater Town Council. We are proud to take this step, reflecting our values as a community that stands alongside those who serve and have served.
“This is not just a symbolic gesture. It is a clear commitment to take action, to strengthen partnerships, and to ensure that members of the Armed Forces community are supported and recognised in Bridgwater.”
Councillor Redman added,
“On behalf of Bridgwater Town Council, I want to thank our Armed Forces personnel, veterans and their families for their dedication, bravery and sacrifice. We are proud to stand with you.”
The Armed Forces Day event featured military displays, live entertainment and opportunities for the public to engage with service personnel and veterans.
Events like this require a significant amount of planning and dedication. Bridgwater Town Council extends its sincere thanks to everyone involved in organising and delivering the day, as well as to all those who attended to show their support.
The Council would also like to recognise the valued contribution of the Bridgwater branch of the Royal British Legion, whose ongoing work supports veterans and their families within our community.
Bridgwater Town Council encourages local businesses and organisations to consider signing the Armed Forces Covenant and pledging their support.
