On Thursday, 1 May, Bridgwater Town Council held its Annual Town Meeting at the Bridgwater Town Hall Theatre, welcoming nearly 50 residents and guests.
The Bridgwater Silver was on display, an historic collection that includes ceremonial maces, wine cups, silver bowls, and an Infantry Officer’s dress sword—each piece a gift to the Town Council over the years.
Under Section 9 of the Local Government Act 1972, all Town and Parish Councils must hold an Annual Town/Parish meeting, between 1 March and 1 June each year.
This year’s Bridgwater Town Council meeting held special significance as it marked exactly one year since the devolution agreement with Somerset Council.
That transfer of assets and services—including street cleaning, road sweeping, and the management of parks and open spaces—has enabled Bridgwater Town Council to take greater local control and safeguard essential services for the community.
The Mayor of Bridgwater, Councillor Jacqui Solomon, opened the evening with a warm welcome before handing over to Jeremy James, who talked about the Animating the Town Centre fund from Bridgwater Town Deal.
This was followed by Councillor Brian Smedley, Leader of Bridgwater Town Council, and David Mears, Town Clerk who presented an overview of the past year’s achievements and challenges.
The Mayors chosen charity, Seed of Hope CIC were presented with a cheque for £1,644.23 following some successful fundraising events held by the Mayor.
An important element of the evening was hearing from several of the Council’s 2024/25 grant recipients. Speakers included:
- Sam Smith from Rhode Lane Wanderers,
- Deb Buller from Deafinate Matters,
- Emily Bull from Youth Adventure Trust,
- Scott O’Hara from Seed Sedgemoor
- Estelle Gilbert from South West Heritage Trust to talk about the Brick and Tile Museum
It was inspiring and encouraging to hear of the good work the community organisations and individuals have been able to provide with support from the town council.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Bridgwater Cup. This award celebrates those who go above and beyond and make a significant contribution to the life of the town.
This year’s recipient is Sam Smith, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to the Hamp Community via Rhode Lane Wanderers.
The meeting concluded with an open forum, allowing attendees the chance to raise questions, share concerns, and engage directly with Council leaders.
Bridgwater Town Council would like to thank everyone who attended and contributed to this meaningful annual tradition.
