The Friends of Blake Museum have published a new book by David Sebborn, The Blakes of Bridgwater and the English Revolution.
Completed in late 2017, just weeks before David suffered a life-changing stroke that severely impacted his mobility and speech, this meticulously researched work lay undiscovered until May 2024. In a poignant twist of fate, David’s eldest grandchild unearthed an unmarked memory stick containing the manuscript in the very same week the Blake Museum contacted the family with news of a generous legacy — left to fund a project connected with the Blakes..
The book explores the pivotal role of the Blake family during the turbulent years of the English Civil War and beyond, drawing on countless hours David spent poring over wills, letters, and archival materials at the South West Heritage Trust archives in Taunton.
David Sebborn is well known locally as the former Education and Outreach Officer at the Blake Museum. His work brought history to life for hundreds of schoolchildren, often through engaging costumed storytelling — particularly about the Battle of Sedgemoor. He was also a dedicated member of the Bridgwater Garrison of the Sealed Knot, a national Civil War re-enactment group.
In 2000, David authored the widely respected Your Faithful Servant, which offered unique insight into the letters of the Cromwellian navy. Though out of print, copies of this earlier book are also available for purchase from the Blake Museum.
The Blakes of Bridgwater and the English Revolution stands as a testament to David Sebborn’s tireless commitment to preserving and sharing the rich history of Bridgwater and its people.
Copies of the book are available to purchase from the Blake Museum at a cost of £11.80
