It is with great sadness that Bridgwater Town Council announces the passing of Councillor Alex Glassford, Councillor for Fairfax East Ward.
Cllr Alex Glassford has passed away suddenly after a short battle with cancer. Alex has been a Sedgemoor District Councillor for the Fairfax ward of Bridgwater from 2011 until Sedgemoor District Council was abolished in April 2023, and a Bridgwater Town Councillor from 2011 to 2019 and then 2022 to 2023. He was the Mayor of Bridgwater in 2016-2017 and Mayor’s consort in 2022-2023. During his time in public office he was a regular member of the Sedgemoor District and Bridgwater Town Planning committees and had a 100% attendance record. Alex, who was born in Glasgow, moved to Bridgwater and was the manager at the Paragon laundry on Taunton Road and then the proprietor of the Bridgwater Labour Club, and worked at the Railway Club and the Bristol and Exeter (B&E).
The Mayor of Bridgwater Cllr Mick Lerry said “I was extremely sad to hear that Cllr Alex Glassford had lost his short battle with cancer. I have known Alex for a number of years and listened to his stories about Scotland, Railway Club and his work at the local Laundry. We were both councillors on Sedgemoor District Council and Bridgwater Town Council. He was a quiet man who often gave a pragmatic view when speaking at Council”.
Cllr Brian Smedley, leader of Bridgwater Town Council said “We are obviously upset at the loss of our friend and colleague, Alex Glassford. His dedication to the people of Bridgwater and the Labour cause was reflected in his 100% attendance record. He will be missed by us all.”
Councillor Gill Slocombe, leader of the Conservative group on the Council added “I am so sorry to hear about Alex, he was always so kind and thoughtful to me. A very dear colleague and friend, he will be sadly missed. He used to laugh with me after our little chats and tell me he would be in trouble for talking with me! I will never forget him.
Bridgwater Town Council’s thoughts are with Alex’s family and close friends.
