On Saturday 21 March several community litter picks took place simultaneously across Bridgwater as part of the Great British Spring Clean.
The Great British Spring Clean, led by the charity Keep Britain Tidy, is the UK’s largest environmental campaign, running from 13 – 29 March 2026.
This initiative brings together residents, schools, businesses and local authorities to improve public spaces, raise awareness of environmental issues and inspire lasting behavioural change. Reducing litter not only protects wildlife and ecosystems but also helps create cleaner, more welcoming spaces for everyone.
Since its launch in 2016, millions of volunteers, known as “Litter Heroes”, have pledged to protect and enhance the places they love, collecting over 4.5 million bags of litter nationwide.
Thanks to regular council maintenance, most Bridgwater Town Council managed areas needed only light litter picking, although volunteers collected a notable amount of rubbish from areas beyond the town boundary, showing commitment to keeping the wider community looking its best. Bridgwater Town Council operatives supported these efforts by collecting and responsibly disposing of all litter gathered across the different locations.
This collaborative approach highlights the strong community spirit that makes events like the Great British Spring Clean so valuable.
Following this successful “super Saturday”, members of the voluntary Blake Gardens Community Group joined forces with Blossom in Somerset on Tuesday 24 March to host their own Great British Spring Clean event, working together to care for Blake Gardens and Little Blake through a community litter pick.
Their involvement highlights how local groups play a central role in keeping Bridgwater’s green spaces thriving, not only during national campaigns, but throughout the year.

Cllr Kathy Pearce said,
“Litter is a blight on our communities. It only takes a minute to put litter in the bin or take it home. It’s incumbent on all of us to keep our streets tidy all year round. A huge thank you for everyone who turned out to do their bit, your efforts are greatly appreciated.
“A big shout out as well to our Street Cleaning Teams, who work tirelessly throughout the year to keep our neighbourhoods clean and tidy.
Bridgwater Town Council would like to thank everyone who supported the Great British Spring Clean this year. These collective efforts show that small actions, taken together, can make a meaningful difference.
