A crucial Somerset County Council bus service which supports residents who don’t have access to a car or public transport has expanded its reach.
New services have been added to cover Mendip, Sedgemoor and South Somerset for residents and a new online registration form has also been launched to get potential users signed up quickly and easily. The service is available to anyone in Somerset who doesn’t have access to a car or public transport, or has a disability which makes access to public transport difficult. It’s especially helpful to those in more rural locations.
What’s more, there is a 50 per cent fare reduction for Concessionary Bus Pass holders, and for children aged 5-16, while under-fives go free.
Eligible passengers need to register first, this can be done online, and then they can simply book their journey on a phone line. Planning ahead is advisable.
Journeys to COVID vaccination appointments are free to bus pass holders.
Building on existing services in Taunton, Wellington, Chard and Ilminster, West Somerset, key towns in Mendip and Sedgemoor, the Slinky now offers:
- More availability in the Mendip and Sedgemoor areas
- A new South Petherton, Crewkerne and Yeovil service
- An extension of the Martock service to Langport
Cllr John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways and Transport said: “This is a vital service which fills the gaps for people living in more isolated areas of Somerset, or for those without easy access to transport.
“Rural counties like ours suffer when it comes to coverage for public transport – we are hoping to change that, we’re currently bidding for £163m from the Government’s Bus Back Better fund which will transform services in the county if we’re successful.
“But there’s always going to be a need for extra services like Slinky to ensure those who can’t easily use public transport are catered for. It’s a great service and I’d urge residents to register if you think you’re eligible.”
Here’s what some of Slinky’s regular passengers have to say about the service:
Reg from Pilton who uses the Mendip Central Slinky Service: “The service is excellent and enables me to retain independence and get my own shopping. The staff are always helpful and polite.”
Dione from Westbury Sub Mendip who uses the Mendip West Slinky Service: “I couldn’t manage without it. It has allowed me to be independent and socialise with the outside world.”
