The much-anticipated Bridgwater Carnival is set to take place on Saturday, 2 November.
This annual event, a highlight for the town, has seen countless hours of preparation from dedicated clubs and committee members over the past year.
Bridgwater Town Council also has a part to play, particularly in the extensive cleanup operation that follows the festivities.
The Council’s contribution to ensure the town is restored to its pristine condition starts around 4am, when a dedicated team of approximately 20 staff members begin the meticulous task of sweeping and collecting debris left by the 150,000 spectators.
This operation, costing an estimated £5,000, covers staff time, vehicles, bags, and the disposal of glasses, cans and food wrappers.
The cleanup typically takes about seven and a half hours to cover the two-and-a-half-mile route, with additional time required if windy conditions cause litter to scatter.
As you make your way home from the Carnival, please spare a thought for the hardworking cleanup crew. You can support their efforts by taking your litter home with you.
Cllr Tim Mander, Chair of Bridgwater Town Council’s Amenities Committee, emphasised the Council’s commitment to keeping the town clean.
“We have a dedicated team in place to ensure we can keep the town clean. The Bridgwater Carnival, while hugely popular and successful, presents a challenge, but our hardworking staff will ensure no trace is left of the previous evening’s entertainment.”
He added, “We encourage the public to help by taking their rubbish with them.”
