Significant progress is being made behind the scenes at Bridgwater Town Hall, with extensive preparation works now underway to bring the much-loved theatre back to life and secure its future for generations to come.
Over the past four weeks, contractors have been carrying out a wide range of essential works throughout the building as part of the ambitious restoration and improvement project.
The Charter Hall and Front of House spaces have been stripped out, preparing for the upcoming renovations. The removal of false ceilings within the Theatre toilets has revealed more of the building’s original features and structure. The infrastructure package to this scheme is a large part of the renovation, with a significant amount of preparatory works to accommodate new mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) services, which will provide modern, efficient systems while supporting the long-term sustainability of the venue.
In the Theatre, auditorium floor strengthening works have already been concluded to help to future-proof the venue and ensure it can continue to serve audiences and performers for many years to come.
Meanwhile, substantial activity has been taking place around the stage area, where investigations have revealed some fascinating glimpses into the building’s history. Amongst these discoveries, an archaeologist is on site recording these elements of the building’s history as part of the project’s commitment to preserving the Town Hall’s heritage.
Specialist contractors are also on site, safely removing asbestos where required, a vital component to prepare the building for its refurbishment. At the same time, work is progressing to create the space needed for a new platform lift, including structural alterations, improving accessibility and ensure the Town Hall Stage can be enjoyed by everyone.
While much of the activity is not visible, a huge amount of work has been taking place in a short period of time. These vital preparatory works lay the foundations for the next stages of the project and represent an important milestone in the transformation of one of Bridgwater’s most iconic historic buildings.
As the restoration continues, the project team remains focused on carefully balancing the preservation of the Town Hall’s rich heritage with the creation of a modern and sustainable venue that will serve the community for decades to come.
