Bridgwater Town Council has welcomed the decision to reinstate parking spaces on Salmon Parade, describing it as a positive step that reflects the concerns raised by local businesses, residents and councillors.
The decision forms part of Somerset Council’s wider review of the Celebration Mile regeneration project, which has been assessing elements such as parking provision and traffic arrangements on Salmon Parade and East Quay.
The move follows sustained pressure from Bridgwater Town Council, including a cross-party motion agreed just before Christmas, which called for a review of the Celebration Mile scheme and the reintroduction of parking in key areas of the town centre.
Councillor Brian Smedley, Leader of Bridgwater Town Council said,
“We welcome Somerset Council’s decision to reinstate parking on Salmon Parade. This has been a key concern for Bridgwater Town Council and follows sustained pressure from us, including a cross-party motion agreed just before Christmas calling for a review of the scheme.
“This was one of several issues raised during a round table discussion between Bridgwater Town Council, our partners and Somerset Council at a specially convened Town Development Forum, where it was agreed that aspects of the Celebration Mile would be reconsidered.
“While this is a positive step forward, it is only part of what was discussed. Further work is still needed, particularly around the direction of traffic flow on Salmon Parade and East Quay, as well as wider concerns relating to Eastover.
“We now urge Somerset Council to follow through on the commitments made at that time and deliver the remaining changes for the benefit of our town centre, residents and businesses.”
Works to reinstate parking are due to take place overnight from 7pm on Monday 18 May to 6am on Wednesday 20 May. The road will be closed each night during these hours to allow for the removal of existing markings and installation of new lining. Access for residents and businesses will be maintained throughout.
Bridgwater Town Council will continue to engage with Somerset Council and stakeholders as further updates on the scheme are brought forward.
