The Friends of Blake Museum will welcome maritime expertise this June as Captain Jessica Tyson, Harbour Master for the Port of Bridgwater and an experienced marine pilot, delivers a special talk titled “The Tide is High.”
Taking place on Tuesday 9 June, the event will offer a unique opportunity to hear from one of the key figures responsible for overseeing maritime activity in Bridgwater.
As Harbour Master, Captain Tyson plays a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the port. The Port of Bridgwater covers a wide area, stretching across Bridgwater Bay from Brean Down to Hinkley Point and along miles of tidal waterways including the Rivers Parrett, Brue and parts of the Axe.
In her role of Harbour Master she is responsible for navigation safety, vessel movements and the day-to-day management of the harbour, while her work as a marine pilot involves guiding ships through challenging waterways and conditions. Her combined expertise provides a valuable perspective on life and work along one of the UK’s most distinctive tidal rivers.
While the talk will take “The Tide is High” as its theme, audiences can expect an engaging and accessible introduction to the realities of managing a working port, alongside reflections on the importance of local waterways to the area’s heritage and future.
The event is expected to appeal to a wide audience, including local residents, history enthusiasts and anyone with an interest in maritime life.
Doors open at 7.00pm, with the talk beginning at 7.30pm. The event takes place at Blake Museum, 5 Blake Street, Bridgwater, TA6 3NB.
The event is free for Friends of the Blake Museum, with a small admission fee of £3 for non-members, payable on the door.
