Bridgwater Town Council’s investment in renewable energy is now delivering results, with the solar panel installation at the ReCreation Community Hub fully operational and generating clean electricity for the building.
A major factor in making the project possible was the successful securing of grant funding, which covered 75% of the installation costs. This significant external investment enabled the Council to deliver the project while minimising the cost to local taxpayers and maximising the long-term benefits for the community.
Since taking over the Centre in 2023 and opening it as a community hub in January 2024, the Council has focused on creating a sustainable, energy-efficient facility that serves local residents of all ages. Today, the Hub welcomes nearly 300 people each week through a diverse programme of activities, support services and community groups.
The photovoltaic (solar) panels are now generating renewable energy directly from the Centre’s roof and is expected to produce approximately 16,140 kWh of electricity each year, supplying around 35% of the building’s annual energy requirements. By generating a significant proportion of its own power, the Hub is reducing both its carbon emissions and ongoing energy costs.
This investment not only supports the Council’s environmental ambitions but also strengthens the long-term financial sustainability of the Centre, helping ensure it can continue to provide a warm, welcoming and inclusive space for the community for years to come.

The solar installation represents another important step in Bridgwater Town Council’s ongoing commitment to reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency and investing in facilities that benefit both residents and the environment.
