Residents and visitors will have a rare opportunity to see one of Bridgwater’s most treasured historical artefacts when the Bridgwater Historical Tapestry goes on public display at St Mary’s Church as part of Heritage Open Days 2026.
The exhibition will take place on Saturday 12 September 2026, from 10.00am to 3.00pm, at St Mary’s Church, St Mary Street, Bridgwater, TA6 3EQ. Entry is free and no pre-booking is required.
The Bridgwater Historical Tapestry tells the story of the town through a series of beautifully embroidered panels, depicting significant events and people from Bridgwater’s rich and fascinating past. Measuring just under 32 metres in length, the tapestry charts the town’s history from the Stone Age through to the modern era.
The display is especially significant as it is only the third time in 75 years that the tapestry has been exhibited publicly, making it a truly unmissable opportunity for local people, history enthusiasts and visitors alike.
Created for the 1951 Festival of Britain, the original tapestry was designed and embroidered by pupils from Westover Secondary Modern School. In 1969, additional panels were added by pupils of Westover Secondary Mixed School to commemorate 500 years of the Mayoralty of Bridgwater, resulting in the remarkable historical record that exists today.
The exhibition coincides with the year in which the world-famous Bayeux Tapestry is being displayed in the UK, offering a timely opportunity to celebrate a textile masterpiece much closer to home. While differing in scale and international profile, the Bridgwater Historical Tapestry is a unique and invaluable record of the town’s heritage, community spirit and artistic achievement.
Visitors will be able to explore the intricate craftsmanship of the embroidered panels while gaining insight into the people, events and milestones that have shaped Bridgwater over centuries.
The display forms part of the national Heritage Open Days programme, which celebrates England’s history and culture by opening up local heritage sites and special events to the public.
