Bridgwater Town Council has welcomed a recent update from Avon and Somerset Police, based on information provided by the Somerset CCTV Control Room, which highlights the important role CCTV continues to play in helping keep the town safe.
The update confirmed that officers from the Bridgwater Neighbourhood Team arrested two individuals after CCTV operators assisted police in quickly locating those involved. One individual has since been charged with three theft offences, one burglary offence and two breaches of a Criminal Behaviour Order, while a second individual was arrested on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear at court.
The successful outcome demonstrates the value of close partnership working between the police and CCTV operators, helping officers respond quickly to incidents and supporting efforts to tackle crime and anti-social behaviour.
Councillor Tim Mander, Chair of Bridgwater Town Council Amenities Committee said,
“This latest police action clearly demonstrates the value of having a comprehensive CCTV system in place. After Somerset Council took the decision to withdraw funding for CCTV Bridgwater Town Council did not hesitate to step in with funding to preserve the essential cameras that cover the town centre and beyond.
“The CCTV network helps keep residents, businesses and visitors safe by providing reassurance, supporting investigations and enabling swift action when incidents occur.
“Bridgwater Town Council remains committed to investing in and supporting CCTV provision across the town because it is a vital tool in helping the police tackle crime and anti-social behaviour and we are proud to work alongside our partners to help make Bridgwater a safer place for everyone.”
Bridgwater Town Council continues to fund and support CCTV provision as part of its wider commitment to community safety and working in partnership with organisations that help protect residents and businesses throughout the town.
