Bridgwater Town Council wishes to inform residents that a drone-based site survey will take place at the Recreation Community Hub on the morning of Wednesday, 6 August. This survey marks a vital step toward the proposed installation of up to 50 photovoltaic (solar) panels on the Centre’s roof.
The drone will capture high-resolution aerial imagery of the site to support the technical team to seek optimal placement and requirements for the proposed installation of solar panels. This advanced method offers greater accuracy, improved safety, and a faster turnaround compared to traditional surveying techniques.
“This is an exciting step toward our goal of making clean, renewable energy a reality for our community,” said Cllr Tim Mander, Chair of the Amenities Committee. “Using drone technology not only improves efficiency, but it also reflects our commitment to innovation and sustainability.”
The solar panel installation is part of a wider initiative to reduce carbon emissions, lower energy costs, and demonstrate environmental leadership. Once complete, the system is projected to generate approximately 16,140 kWh of electricity annually, meeting around 35.3% of the Centre’s energy needs and significantly reducing its carbon footprint.
Thanks to a successful grant application covering 75% of the installation cost, the Council’s remaining investment is expected to be repaid within 18 months. This ensures the Centre becomes a more energy-efficient and sustainable community asset.
“This is good news for both the community and the planet,” added Cllr Mander. “The Recreation Hub will become a shining example of what a decarbonised public facility can look like.”
Residents may notice drones operating in the area during the survey. All operations will be carried out in full compliance with aviation regulations and with respect for privacy and safety.
This investment not only supports Bridgwater’s environmental sustainability goals but also strengthens the Centre’s financial resilience – ensuring it remains a warm, inclusive, and supportive space for all.
