Bridgwater Town Council has joined communities in Canada and Cornwall to celebrate the centenary of a pioneering achievement in global communications that helped shape the modern world.
The 100th anniversary commemorations marked the historic commercial shortwave wireless connection established between Drummondville, Québec and the United Kingdom on 25 October 1926. The original transmission was received at the Marconi station at Huntworth, Bridgwater, before being relayed onwards to Poldhu in Cornwall, creating a breakthrough that transformed international communications.
Throughout the centenary year, Bridgwater Town Council has worked alongside partners in Drummondville, Yamachiche and Bodmin to recognise the significance of this extraordinary technological achievement and its lasting impact on modern telecommunications. The pioneering work undertaken by Guglielmo Marconi and his colleagues laid foundations for many of the communication technologies that are now part of everyday life.
As part of the international celebrations, Bridgwater Town Council was represented at a number of commemorative events, including an international press conference that brought together participating communities on both sides of the Atlantic.
Mayor of Bridgwater, Councillor Leigh Redman, also provided a recorded message which was played during the centenary banquet in Drummondville, helping to reinforce the strong links that have developed between the partner communities during the commemorations.
While the anniversary celebrated a milestone in communications technology, it also highlighted the value of international friendship and shared heritage.
Representatives from the participating towns reflected on how a breakthrough made possible by innovation and determination a century ago continues to connect communities today.
Councillor Leigh Redman, Mayor of Bridgwater said,
“It was a privilege for Bridgwater to play a part in marking this important international centenary. The achievements of those involved in establishing the first commercial shortwave transatlantic link demonstrated how innovation can overcome distance and bring people together.
“This anniversary has not only celebrated a remarkable chapter in communications history, but has also strengthened the friendships between our communities. Bridgwater is proud of its place in this story and looks forward to continuing these international relationships in the years ahead.”
The centenary events have provided an opportunity to recognise Bridgwater’s significant role in one of the greatest communications breakthroughs of the twentieth century. They have also served as a reminder that the spirit of innovation and cooperation that made the original achievement possible remains as relevant today as it was a century ago.
