Bridgwater Chamber of Commerce hosted the launch of this year’s Sedgemoor Business Excellence Awards, which are a chance for the District’s many growing, innovative and prosperous businesses to celebrate their successes.
A networking lunch at the ibis Hotel heard that there were 16 awards up for grabs at a gala dinner on November 25th with Zeal Hotels as the main sponsor.
Chamber Relationship Manager, Diogo Rodrigues, said: “These awards give businesses a fantastic opportunity to reflect on their own successes and the success of the entire business community in Sedgemoor. We have so many businesses in Sedgemoor that have achieved a great deal and these awards give those businesses the chance to shine”.
“One of the new award categories this year is the Sustainability/Low Carbon Award. This is a key area for businesses as we move towards net-zero and will allow businesses to reflect on the challenges and opportunities they face in reducing their carbon footprint. This award ties in with the work we are doing to develop a Sedgemoor Low Carbon Initiative.”
The meeting heard from Becky Wright, an award-winning mental health trainer from New Leaf, who is sponsoring the Award for Sustainability/Low Carbon.
Becky spoke about the way New Leaf made changes to their core business activities to address the climate crisis such as relooking at their pension scheme after realising that their pensions were linked to environmental devastation, and choosing to bank with a sustainable bank that chooses not to invest in fossil fuels or coal power.
She also drew attention to the Somerset Climate Summit for businesses, on September the 21st, which she will be speaking at and a workshop she is co-facilitating to help businesses start the B Corp journey, on October 12th.
