A total of 153,000 spring flowering bulbs have been planted across 10 locations in Bridgwater, including two of the town’s cemeteries, as part of Bridgwater Town Council’s ongoing programme to enhance green spaces, support biodiversity and provide seasonal colour throughout the town.
The planting builds on last year’s bulb displays, which proved popular with residents and visitors and encouraged the Council to expand the programme to additional locations.
The scheme features the Bee Surprise XL and Butterfly XL bulb collections from Lubbe & Sons, including a wide range of spring-flowering species such as crocus, camassia, hyacinths, narcissus, tulips and alliums.
The bulbs have been planted at a number of prominent locations across Bridgwater. Some sites have been planted with the collections side by side, while others feature blended mixes of varieties, creating different displays and flowering patterns throughout the spring season.
The selected varieties will provide an early source of food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, while many of the bulbs are naturalising species that will continue to establish and return in future years helping to support local biodiversity.
Bridgwater Town Council worked in partnership with Lubbe & Sons on the project, drawing on the company’s expertise in bulb selection and planting design to help deliver displays that are suited to each location.
Councillor Tim Mander, Chair of the Amenities Committee said,
“Following the positive response to last year’s planting, we were keen to build on that success and extend the programme to more locations across the town.
“These bulbs will provide colour throughout the spring months and help enhance open spaces for residents and visitors to enjoy.
“The bulbs will return year after year, so the benefits of this planting will continue to be enjoyed well into the future and we look forward to seeing the displays emerge next spring and watching these locations come to life with colour once again.”
